Empowering Women in Gulu: Rotary Club Donates 30 Sewing Machines for Tailoring Training
In a major step toward empowering women, the Rotary Club of Gulu City has donated 30 sewing machines to support the vocational training of vulnerable women in tailoring. The donation was officially received at Wend Africa offices in Pece-Laroo Division, Gulu City, by Rotary Club President Counsel Walter Okidi-Ladwar.
According to Okidi-Ladwar, the sewing machines are intended to equip women with practical tailoring skills, enabling them to earn a living and support their families. He also emphasized the club’s commitment to wider community development, announcing plans to partner with schools and organizations to address environmental issues, including tree planting initiatives.
Training Led by Wend Africa
The tailoring program will be conducted at Wend Africa, a local organization founded by Ms. Jolly Laker Andruville. She revealed that the total cost of the sewing machines amounted to UGX 42 million, and that a public call will soon be made for interested women to register for the training.
“This initiative will provide the skills and confidence many women need to take control of their futures,” Ms. Laker said.
Voices of Gratitude
Ms. Milka Lamwaka, a past beneficiary of Wend Africa’s tailoring program, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Rotary Club of Gulu for its generous donation.
“This means more women will have a chance to learn and build sustainable livelihoods. It’s a transformation tool,” she noted.
This collaborative effort between the Rotary Club of Gulu City and Wend Africa marks a meaningful step forward in empowering women through vocational skills, laying the foundation for economic independence and community growth.
