The Uganda delegation to Pope Francis burial will be led by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, following President Museveni’s decision to appoint her as Uganda’s representative. Pope Francis passed away on April 21, and the burial will take place on April 26 in Vatican City.
Sources close to State House revealed that the Vatican had invited President Museveni, but he chose Speaker Among to lead Uganda’s official delegation. A senior government official confirmed the decision, saying, “The President received the invitation and delegated the Speaker to attend.”
Speaker Among is leading a five-member team. It includes two Members of Parliament and two aides. Chris Obore, Director of Communication at Parliament, confirmed her travel plans but declined to name the other delegates. The delegation left Uganda on April 24, ahead of the funeral.
Senior Presidential Press Secretary Sandor Walusimbi also confirmed that the President would not attend the event personally.
Among has met Pope Francis eight times, including five private audiences and three official engagements. Her repeated meetings with the Pope reflect a strong connection between her and the Vatican. Her presence at the burial emphasizes Uganda’s diplomatic and spiritual ties with the Holy See.
During a media interview on April 21, Among reflected on her interactions with Pope Francis. She praised his humility, messages of peace, and dedication to humanitarian causes. She described him as more than a spiritual leader—a global voice for social justice and compassion.
Among also discussed her talks with the Pope on peace, development, and Uganda’s role in global humanitarian efforts. She said the invitation showed recognition of Uganda’s commitment to Vatican relations.
By attending the burial, Speaker Among not only represents the President but also strengthens Uganda’s standing in the global Catholic community. The trip also demonstrates Uganda’s respect for Pope Francis’ legacy.
