Kizza Besigye, Lutale Remanded to Luzira Until May 21 Amid Heated Treason Trial
Kampala, Uganda – May 1, 2025:
Dr. Kizza Besigye, a veteran opposition figure and four-time presidential candidate, and his associate Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, have been returned to Luzira Prison following an adjournment of their high-profile treason case.
The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court pushed the hearing to May 21, 2025, citing ongoing disputes between the defence and prosecution. Both men were heavily guarded as they appeared in court, which was filled with supporters, legal representatives, and prominent figures.
Leading Besigye’s legal defence is Senior Counsel Martha Karua, former Kenyan Justice Minister, supported by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and human rights advocate Eron Kiiza, who was recently released.
Tension Between Legal Teams
State prosecutors accused the defence of stalling the process, particularly over disagreements regarding cross-examinations. In contrast, the defence claimed the State was deliberately delaying justice and refusing to ensure a fair trial.
They also revealed that a revision application had been filed with the High Court and is still pending a ruling.
State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka faced sharp criticism from Besigye’s team for failing to present concrete evidence, with accusations that he was performing “for the gallery” rather than advancing a serious case.
Details of the Allegations
According to the State, Besigye, Lutale, and unnamed co-conspirators are accused of plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government between 2003 and November 2024. The alleged planning is said to have occurred in several international cities, including Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala.
Prosecutors insist that the accusations are supported by actual actions and statements aimed at undermining Uganda’s constitutional government.
As procedural battles continue, the next court session on May 21 is expected to determine the way forward for this politically sensitive trial.
