Residents of a small town on the outskirts of Kampala are in shock following the death of a woman whose house was set on fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning in what is suspected to be a mob attack linked to allegations of homosexuality.
The victim, identified as Nalunga Veronica, was found inside her burning home at around 5:00 a.m. despite efforts by neighbors to extinguish the fire. She was later pronounced dead.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire was deliberately started by a group of people who accused Ms. Nalunga of harboring a woman suspected of engaging in same-sex relationships. Witnesses reported hearing members of the group chanting “Ekibi ky’ebisiyaga kiliina okoma” a Luganda phrase meaning “The sin of homosexuality must come to an end.”
Local residents say the attackers were looking for a woman known as Susan, who they accused of being involved in homosexual relationships. It is alleged that Ms. Nalunga had helped Susan escape after learning that a group was searching for her.
Susan’s whereabouts are currently unknown. Community members claim she was being accused of spreading what they described as “immoral behavior,” including allegations involving children claims that have not been supported by any evidence or confirmed by authorities.
Human rights advocates warn that such accusations are frequently used to justify mob violence against individuals suspected of being LGBTQ+, particularly in low-income communities.

The family of Ms. Nalunga has strongly condemned the killing and called on police to investigate the incident as a criminal act rather than a moral dispute.
“What happened to Veronica is murder,” a family member said. “Even if there were accusations, no one had the right to take the law into their own hands.”
Police have confirmed that investigations are underway, describing the incident as suspected arson and homicide. By press time, no arrests had been announced.
The killing has reignited concerns about mob justice and vigilante violence, particularly in cases involving accusations of homosexuality. Rights organizations have repeatedly warned that Uganda’s legal and social environment has emboldened communities to act violently against suspected LGBTQ+ individuals and those associated with them.
Legal experts note that mob-led punishment undermines the rule of law and places innocent lives at risk, regardless of the accusations involved.
As investigations continue, the death of Nalunga Veronica stands as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of vigilantism and the urgent need for accountability and protection of civilians from mob violence.
