The government has appointed a new Uganda Cancer Institute Board, naming Prof Damalie Nakanjako as Chairperson. The official inauguration took place on June 17 at the Ministry of Health headquarters in Kampala. Prof Nakanjako replaces Prof William Bazeyo, who chaired the previous board of the country’s leading cancer facility.
This new board includes eight members, carefully selected to bring expertise from multiple health sectors. In addition to Prof Nakanjako, the board includes Dr Charles Olaro, Prof Isaac Kajja, Dr Rosemary Byanyima, Dr Lawrence Otim, Ms Mary Philomena Okello, Mr Sabbiti Baguma, and Dr Jackson Orem. Dr Orem also serves as Executive Director of UCI and will act as Secretary to the Board.
Prof Nakanjako, a respected physician and academic, brings over two decades of leadership in medical education, infectious disease care, and health research. Her experience leading major programs at Makerere University and working with the Uganda Virus Research Institute positions her to guide UCI into its next growth phase.
Speaking at the event, Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng urged the new board to work closely with UCI leadership. She stressed the need for regional cancer centers to reduce patient congestion in Kampala. According to her, decentralizing services will not only save time for patients but also improve cancer outcomes across Uganda. She expressed full confidence in the board’s ability to deliver.
Dr Aceng said, “With the board fully composed and inaugurated, I believe you will act with integrity and commitment. This is an important mandate, and I expect tangible results.”
Prof Nakanjako expressed deep appreciation for the appointment. She acknowledged UCI’s history and called it a national asset. “The Uganda Cancer Institute has served this country for over 50 years. That alone proves its resilience. I am honored to lead efforts that will ensure its continued success for another 50 years,” she said.
The Uganda Cancer Institute Board will play a strategic role in expanding cancer services and supporting research partnerships. With cancer cases rising across East Africa, the board’s work will directly impact patient care and regional collaboration. Strengthening leadership at UCI comes at a critical time, and many expect the board to deliver improvements in access, treatment, and innovation.
