President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has affirmed Uganda’s full readiness to host the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, which will serve as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. This was during a high-level engagement at State Lodge Nakasero on July 7, where Museveni hosted Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Africa, and a delegation from World Rugby.

Speaking after being presented with both the Webb Ellis Trophy and the Commonwealth Games King’s Baton, Museveni described rugby as a sport that promotes discipline, fitness, teamwork, and social transformation.

“Rugby builds collective strength. You can’t win by individual brilliance alone. That’s the spirit Uganda needs—unity and shared purpose,” said Museveni.

Why Uganda Was Chosen

Mr. Mensah commended Uganda for its peaceful environment, growing sports infrastructure, and track record in athletics. He emphasized the country’s suitability to host high-profile tournaments.

“We’re here because Uganda has what it takes: infrastructure, peace, and commitment,” Mensah noted. “Your Excellency, Uganda’s name is now mentioned alongside great African leaders like Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela.”

Mensah also recalled a past visit with Museveni at his ranch, praising the President’s visionary leadership and wisdom.

Global Recognition for Uganda’s Sports Sector

World Rugby Vice Chair Dr. Jonathan Webb, attending Uganda for the first time, expressed deep admiration for Uganda’s hospitality and growing rugby culture.

“The structure and passion we’ve seen since arriving is remarkable. We’re committed to supporting Uganda’s journey in rugby and in empowering communities through sport,” said Dr. Webb.

Rugby and Uganda’s National Identity

President Museveni highlighted the foundational role of peace in developing Uganda’s sports infrastructure:

“What we built first was peace. Infrastructure is only possible because of that stability,” he said, while also noting Uganda’s increasing presence in women’s sports.

“I’m proud of our daughters. They’ve carried the flag with honor,” he added.

Government’s Continued Support

Hon. Peter Ogwang, Minister of State for Sports, emphasized the strategic impact of hosting the tournament:

“This is more than a match. It’s a platform for global visibility and national inspiration. We thank the First Lady, Maama Janet Museveni, for her steadfast leadership.”

Also present was Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, Permanent Secretary for Education and Sports, highlighting cross-ministry collaboration.https://www.ugandarugby.com/

Uganda’s confirmation to host the Rugby Africa Cup 2025 not only boosts its sports credentials but also aligns with President Museveni’s broader goal of using sports as a tool for unity, youth engagement, and international recognition. With support from Rugby Africa and World Rugby, Uganda is set to shine on the continental stage.https://ugdaily.com/2025-airtel-masaza-cup-launch-uganda/
