In Uganda, the story of Irene Nanfuma stands as a poignant reminder of the cost of political activism. Beginning her political journey in 2006 as a volunteer for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and later joining the National Unity Platform (NUP) in 2017, Nanfuma’s experiences highlight the challenges faced by those who dare to oppose the government’s stance.

A Victory Marred by Violence

In 2018, Nanfuma’s political activism took a harrowing turn during the Bugiri by-elections. Following the victory of their candidate, Asuman Basalirwa, the celebration was abruptly halted by a police raid. Nanfuma, among others, was arrested, detained for two weeks, and subjected to severe beatings and torture, a brutal reprisal for her political engagement. Her release was secured only through her mother’s intervention, who had to bribe the police, setting the stage for a cycle of harassment that included regular police check-ins.

The Cycle Continues

Despite the ordeal, Nanfuma continued her involvement in political activities, serving as a polling agent in the 2021 elections. However, the shadow of state repression loomed large. In September 2022, another NUP meeting was raided by police, leading to her arrest and further beatings, necessitating hospitalization. This episode of violence was compounded by the distressing disappearance of her husband in the same month, a personal tragedy that remains unresolved.

Forced into Exile

In the aftermath, fearing for her safety, Nanfuma retreated to the village, a move prompted by her mother’s concerns over escalating government persecution. This decision marks a forced hiatus from her political activism, driven by the harsh realities of state-induced violence and intimidation.

Reflecting on the Struggle

Irene Nanfuma’s story encapsulates the resilience and courage of those who stand up for democratic principles in the face of authoritarianism. Her experiences underscore the significant risks and sacrifices borne by political activists in Uganda, serving as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice in the face of governmental tyranny.
