On Tuesday morning, there were running battles between Kyambogo University students and police from Naguru and Jinja Road. The students were protesting over a number of unmet grievances, including delayed remittance of allowances, missing marks, and cumulative increment in tuition fees in the form of surcharge fines on defaulters. The students, led by their Guild president Wafula Kwoyelo, took to the streets to express their frustrations.
Despite writing letters to the Senate administrators and the University Vice Chancellor, Professor Eli Katunguka, the students’ grievances were not addressed. One Government students’ representative complained that they had tried everything to make their frustrations known but to no avail. As a result, the students felt compelled to resort to protests to make themselves heard.
The protests disrupted lectures, as police officers from the Field Force Unit lobbed teargas, leading to plumes of smoke in the air. The protests continued into the afternoon, with bonfires lit on major streets leading to the University. Several students were also arrested, and a detailed police statement on the matter is yet to be released.
