Anita Among Calls for Harmony and Non-Violence in the Aftermath of Recent Killings
In a strong condemnation of recent acts of violence in Uganda, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among denounced the shootings of Ugandan citizens as barbaric and inhumane. Among made these remarks while presiding over the plenary session on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, where tributes were being paid to the late Hon. Charles Engola, the former State Minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations, who was fatally shot on May 2, 2023, by his bodyguard Wilson Sabiiti, who later took his own life.
Following the incident involving Hon. Charles Engola, another shooting took place near Kampala suburb, Kyanja, targeting vlogger Ibrahim Tusubira, also known as Isma Olaxess or Jajja Ichuli. Tusubira had previously celebrated the death of Hon. Engola.
Speaker Anita Among strongly condemned the gunmen and killers responsible for these tragic events, expressing her deep concern about the senseless loss of Ugandan lives. She described such acts as barbaric and cowardly.
Addressing the nation, Among called on Ugandans not to resort to vigilantism and emphasized the importance of upholding the law. She reminded the public that life and death are predetermined, and despite differences in opinions or beliefs, violence is not the solution.
“While we may hold different views in matters of religion, politics, and other aspects, resorting to violence is not the answer. No one has the right to take another person’s life under any circumstances. The cycle of life is controlled by a higher power, and it is essential to respect that there is a time to be born and a time to die,” stated Among.
The Speaker urged Ugandans to foster a spirit of harmony and peaceful coexistence, even in the face of disagreements. She emphasized that enemies should not meet their demise through acts of violence.
Among extended her condolences to the family of the deceased vlogger and strongly condemned the practice of celebrating the misfortune or death of individuals with whom one disagrees. She labeled such behavior as inhumane, uncultured, and highly immoral.
“I express my utmost displeasure with the regrettable trend in our country, where people celebrate the misfortune of those they disagree with. This is an unacceptable practice, and it goes against our values as a society,” Among added.
As the nation mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of these tragic events, Speaker Anita Among’s impassioned call for non-violence and unity serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy, respect, and peaceful dialogue in resolving differences and building a harmonious society.
