Hon. Muhammad Ali Aluma, the Secretary General of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), recently welcomed a delegation from MTN, led by Farook Lwanga, Manager of Formal Merchant Acquisition at MTN’s headquarters in Kampala. The purpose of their visit was to introduce UMSC to MTN’s Mobile Money (MoMo) services, which offer fast, secure, and affordable money transfers and payments.
During the meeting, Mr. Lwanga elaborated on the various benefits of MTN’s MoMo services, emphasizing their potential for digitalizing payment processes. He highlighted specific areas where the services could be instrumental for UMSC, such as collecting swadaq, zakah, payments for Haj & UMRA, and Halal fees from slaughterhouses.
Expressing enthusiasm for the proposal, Hon. Aluma, in his welcoming remarks, provided an overview of UMSC’s administrative structure and nationwide presence. He conveyed UMSC’s willingness to collaborate with MTN and stressed the importance of educating the public about the services being offered. Hon. Aluma recognized the potential of the partnership to enhance payment efficiency and streamline financial transactions.

Both parties reached an agreement to commence the necessary procedures leading to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing their partnership. The MoU will outline the terms and conditions for implementing the collaboration, solidifying the shared objectives of UMSC and MTN.
Hon. Yaziidi Katureebe, the UMSC Secretary for Administration and Human Resource, and Ms. Afua Mugumya, an Accountant in the UMSC Department of Finance and Planning, were also present at the meeting, underscoring UMSC’s commitment to exploring this strategic partnership.
The collaboration between UMSC and MTN’s MoMo services represents a significant step towards digital transformation in payment and collection systems within the Ugandan Muslim community. By harnessing the convenience and security of mobile money solutions, UMSC aims to streamline its financial transactions and provide an efficient experience for its members and stakeholders.
As the partnership progresses, UMSC and MTN will work together to educate the public about the benefits and accessibility of MoMo services. This joint effort will ensure widespread awareness and encourage the adoption of digital payment methods within UMSC’s mandate.
