Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, the Leader of the Opposition in Uganda’s Parliament, has voiced concerns about the country’s future on the occasion of its 61st independence anniversary. He believes Uganda’s path to true democracy remains uncertain.
In a statement marking the anniversary, Mpuuga expressed disappointment with the nation’s progress since independence, highlighting significant shortcomings in its transition from colonial rule. He noted that Uganda’s founding fathers aspired to create a nation where citizens would have complete control and better governance than what the colonialists left behind but argued that Uganda has fallen short in three key areas.
One major concern for Mpuuga is the removal of presidential term limits in the 1995 Constitution, a move favoring the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Mpuuga believes that this has undermined the country’s democratic principles.
