Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, at the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), cautioned against the misuse of scientific and technological progress for exploitative purposes. Instead, he advocated redirecting these advancements towards the collective struggle against oppression and challenges faced by humanity. The conference, spanning from January 3rd to 6th, serves as a platform for Speakers and Presiding Officers from Commonwealth nations to discuss parliamentary democracy, impartiality, and fairness.

Museveni reflected on the formation of the Commonwealth, emphasizing that its establishment was rooted in a decision by countries formerly part of the British Empire to retain certain beneficial aspects, such as the English language and the concept of representative government. However, he pointed out persistent challenges within the Commonwealth, including what he described as philosophical shallowness and the monopolization of knowledge driven by greed.

The President urged global leaders to abandon manipulative approaches and refrain from lecturing societies different from their own on what they should do. Instead, he encouraged leaders to lead by example, fostering a peaceful world with rapid progress. The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, expressed gratitude for Museveni’s consistent support for inter-parliamentary engagements, acknowledging the efforts of the Local Organizing Committee in ensuring the success of the conference.

In attendance were notable figures including Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, Second Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Moses Ali, various ministers, members of parliament, and other dignitaries. The conference is expected to contribute to discussions on equity, inclusivity, democratisation, good governance, and the rule of law within the Commonwealth, aiming for positive outcomes for humanity.
