In a statement released on Monday, police spokesperson Mr. Fred Enanga urged Jesa Dairy Farm to remove an on-air commercial advert for its juice that portrays a traffic officer as corrupt.
Mr. Enanga clarified that the controversial commercial advert of Jesa Dairy Farm’s juice suggests that a traffic police officer is easily bribed with a pack of Jesa Jus during a routine traffic stop, allowing the driver to proceed without inspection.
He expressed concern that the advert promotes bribery among children and perpetuates negative perceptions of the police force.
The spokesperson noted that the advert falsely implies police leadership endorsement of the product, which is misleading.
Mr. Enanga reminded marketers and ad producers to obtain authorization before using police images in commercial adverts, stressing that the unauthorized use of police uniform is strictly prohibited.
He demanded that Jesa Dairy Farm withdraw the advert or the specific content involving the traffic police officer and cease further displays on various media platforms.
Failure to comply with the directive could result in legal action by the Directorate of Legal and Human Rights Services.
Mr. Enanga referenced Section 169 of the Penal Code Act, which prohibits unauthorized individuals from wearing gazetted armed forces’ uniform, with violators facing imprisonment of up to seven years upon conviction.
