2023’s Most Inclusive Movies

In 2023, Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, captured the world’s attention with its $1.45 billion box office performance. Despite its overwhelming commercial success, the film only ranks 119th on the Inclusion List, a prestigious annual ranking that highlights the 150 most inclusive films over the past five years.

Compiled by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation, the Inclusion List assesses films based on their representation of gender, race, ethnicity, LGBTQ+ identity, disability, and age. This list aims to showcase films that excel in diversity and inclusivity across these categories.

Dr. Smith emphasized the purpose of the list: “In its second year, the Inclusion List celebrates those who show that inclusion is a crucial element of exceptional entertainment.”

Among the most inclusive films, The Woman King (2022) retains its top spot, followed by A Thousand and One (2023) at number two. Other highly-ranked films include Bottoms, The Color Purple, and The Blackening.

While Barbie performs notably well in gender inclusion, ranking in the top 3.33% of films, it still lags behind A Thousand and One, which is ranked within the top 0.67% for overall inclusive representation.

Films like Barbie, A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, and Priscilla scored high for their portrayal of women, both on-screen and behind the scenes. For racial and ethnic diversity, films such as Joy Ride, The Color Purple, A Thousand and One, House Party, and The Blackening led the charge.

Top-ranking films in LGBTQ+ representation included All of Us Strangers, Theater Camp, Bottoms, Knock at the Cabin, and Saltburn. What Happens Later, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Moving On made an impact with their representation of people with disabilities. Additionally, films such as Book Club: The Next Chapter, Marlowe, Moving On, The Miracle Club, and Golda scored highly for their inclusion of older adults.

Other notable 2023 films on the list include Origin, American Fiction, Past Lives, and Chevalier. The list also recognized directors and editors who prioritized diversity, including Catherine Hardwicke, Olivia Wilde, Destin Daniel Cretton, Reinaldo Marcus Green, and Kasi Lemmons, for their work with diverse teams. Editors Annette Davey, Anne McCabe, Blair McClendon, and others were also acknowledged for their contributions to inclusive films.

Universal Pictures led the major studios, with 29 films making the list. Sony Pictures Entertainment followed with 21 films, while Warner Bros. secured 18 spots. A24 topped the independent distributors, with 14 films, closely followed by MGM with 10.
