Chris Evans, the charismatic and beloved face of Captain America, has finally addressed ongoing rumors about his potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite reports suggesting his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, Evans insists he’s not making a comeback.
Speaking to Esquire in a recent interview, Evans dismissed claims of his return, stating:
“That’s not true. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years—ever since ‘Endgame.’ I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no—happily retired!”
Rumors swirled last year that Evans would reprise his role, though not necessarily as Steve Rogers’ Captain America, but possibly as Nomad or a multiverse variant of Cap. With Robert Downey Jr. reportedly returning as Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man, it seemed feasible that Evans could follow suit.
However, Evans’ latest statement contradicts those claims, reaffirming his departure from the MCU.
Evans’ longtime co-star and MCU successor, Anthony Mackie, echoed the sentiment. When discussing Evans’ return, Mackie revealed that Evans had already made his stance clear:
“He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.’”
Mackie even admitted to being caught off guard by the rumors, saying:
“I learned that right there. My manager showed me. He’s like, ‘Oh, so I guess Chris is coming back.’ That’s all I know. I haven’t seen a script.”
Of course, some fans remain skeptical. With actors like Andrew Garfield previously denying their return (only to later appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home), many speculate that Evans could be misleading fans to preserve the surprise.
For now, though, Evans insists he’s out, and MCU fans will have to focus on new characters and storylines. But as Marvel has proven before—never say never.
