Rebecca Chelangat, a rising Ugandan running star, claimed victory in the third edition of the Sevilla Half Marathon held on Sunday in Seville, Spain.
The 23-year-old athlete delivered an exceptional performance, crossing the finish line in an impressive 1:07:18 and earning international acclaim for Uganda.
As Uganda’s reigning national champion in the 10,000m, Chelangat entered the race with a personal best of 1:10:34, which she achieved last year when she secured silver at the Bangsaen21 Half Marathon. Her performance in Seville not only shattered her personal record but also set a new course record.
Chelangat’s remarkable feat earned her €2,000 (Shs7.8M) in prize money, with an additional €1,000 (Shs3.9M) awarded for breaking the course record.
In an impressive display of Ugandan athletic prowess, Annet Chemengich Chelangat secured second place with a time of 1:08:12, closely followed by Ethiopia’s Yalganesh Eskamech Gedefa, who finished third in 1:08:50.
Both Rebecca Chelangat and Annet Chemengich previously represented Uganda in the Women’s 10,000m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, further solidifying their status as world-class athletes.
