Uganda Airlines Boeing Deal Secures 10 Powerful New Aircraft

June 10, 2026

Uganda Airlines Boeing expansion has become reality after the national carrier signed a Shs3.7 trillion agreement to acquire 10 powerful new aircraft from American manufacturer Boeing.

The deal, witnessed by President Yoweri Museveni on June 10, will expand Uganda Airlines’ passenger, cargo, and long-haul operations. Acting Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake signed for the airline, while Boeing Executive Vice President and Head of Sales for Africa Anbessie Yitbarek signed for the supplier.

The acquisition includes eight passenger aircraft with 294 seats each and two cargo freighters: a Boeing 767 wide-body converted freighter and a Boeing 737 Boeing Converted Freighter. These additions aim to strengthen Uganda’s direct connections across regional, continental, and international markets.

Uganda Airlines Boeing deal boosts fleet capacity

Uganda Airlines Boeing agreement comes as the airline struggles with fleet shortages. Recent technical issues forced cancellations on routes to Nigeria, London, and Mumbai. Two Airbus A330neo aircraft underwent unscheduled maintenance, leaving limited capacity for long-haul operations.

The disruptions highlighted the urgent need for additional aircraft. Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama described the acquisition as expensive but strategic. “We need our own airline to connect Uganda directly to the world. That is how we bring investors and tourists,” he said.

The first phase delivers four passenger aircraft. The remaining six aircraft will follow as Uganda Airlines scales its network. The new fleet will provide more reliability and resilience against maintenance-related disruptions.

Why Uganda needs direct air links

Uganda has long relied on foreign hubs for global connections, creating multiple stopovers for travelers and cargo. The new Uganda Airlines Boeing aircraft will allow direct flights to key markets.

Improved direct links are expected to boost tourism, investment, and trade. Cargo planes will facilitate faster transport of agricultural goods and manufactured products, increasing Uganda’s competitiveness in regional markets.

Shorter, efficient routes also reduce operational costs and improve passenger convenience. Strategic route planning will be key to realizing these benefits.

Public financing and implementation

The Uganda Airlines Boeing deal involves an initial government payment of Shs460 billion. Earlier, Shs422.26 billion was secured to support fleet expansion. The funding comes from borrowing and was reported in the Ministry of Finance’s February Performance of the Economy report, reflecting net borrowing of Shs1.22 trillion.

Byamukama emphasized the importance of careful execution to ensure the investment delivers economic value. The project will enhance Uganda Airlines’ capacity while reducing dependence on foreign carriers.

Airport projects and domestic expansion

The fleet expansion is linked to upgrades at Entebbe International Airport and the completion of Kabalega International Airport in Hoima. The government also plans domestic flights to destinations such as Gulu, Kotido, Kidepo, and Mbarara.

Domestic routes will support business travel and tourism within Uganda. Shorter, more frequent flights can complement road transport and open up remote regions for investment opportunities.
