Omuka FC clinched the Under-18 boys’ title, while Obumwe Soccer Academy emerged victorious in the Under-16 girls’ category at the 2025 Kigezi Youth in Sports for Environment Tournament, held at Kabale Municipal Stadium.
The third edition of the tournament, themed “Empowering Youth through Sports for Environmental Action,” brought together 61 teams from across the Kigezi sub-region. Organized through a partnership between Central Division Chairman Sam Arlinaitwe and the Ministry of Water and Environment, the event aimed to nurture young talent while raising awareness about environmental conservation.
Omuka and Obumwe’s Road to Victory
Omuka FC showcased outstanding teamwork and determination, battling through the tournament’s stages before securing a 1-0 victory against Harambe Boys Sports Academy in the final. In the Under-16 girls’ category, Obumwe Soccer Academy delivered a stellar performance to claim the championship.
Sports as a Tool for Environmental Awareness
Chairman Sam Arlinaitwe emphasized that the tournament serves a dual purpose—promoting youth engagement in sports while educating them on environmental conservation. Moving forward, organizers plan to introduce debating competitions and volleyball to attract a broader range of participants.
“Our goal is to ensure that environmental education remains an integral part of this initiative,” Arlinaitwe stated. “We also take tournament winners to the Water Week event in March, which will be held in Mbarara this year.”
Annet Kwarijya Nareba, Social Development Officer at the Ministry of Water and Environment, highlighted the role of sports in shaping environmental responsibility among youth. She emphasized the need to instill conservation habits early, ensuring a lasting impact on communities.
“We want them to grow up knowing they have a responsibility to protect ecosystems,” she explained. “By starting young, they can develop a lifelong culture of conservation.”
Praise for the Tournament’s Impact
Deputy RDC Kabale District, Christopher Aine, applauded the tournament’s success, noting that it not only promotes environmental awareness but also teaches youth how to utilize resources sustainably.
Tournament participants, including Omuka FC captain Jonathan Nayejuka and Obumwe Soccer Academy captain Prudence Alinaitwe, expressed excitement about showcasing their skills while spreading awareness about conservation efforts.
As Omuka FC and Obumwe Soccer Academy celebrated their triumph, the event reaffirmed the power of sports as a platform for change, empowering youth to make a positive impact on their communities and the environment.
