President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda delivered a compelling lecture to 72 students at the Kenya Defence College on July 31, 2025, emphasizing the need for East African unity and economic integration to foster growth, security, and prosperity in the region. His address touched on critical themes of economic cooperation, market access, and strategic security.

Economic Cooperation for Prosperity

In his lecture, President Museveni articulated a vision for the region’s prosperity, asserting, “The key to Africa’s prosperity lies in producing more goods and services, but we must also consider who buys them.” He underscored that for the East African region to fully unlock its economic potential, nations must collaborate, focusing on market access and consumer engagement to stimulate regional growth.

The President highlighted the importance of collaboration across nations, noting that despite East African countries producing similar goods, economic growth is stunted when nations do not prioritize trade within the region. “We all need each other to prosper,” Museveni emphasized, reinforcing the interdependence of East African nations.

Strategic Security Through Economic Integration

Museveni also focused on the strategic security of East Africa, emphasizing how economic integration directly strengthens regional stability. He urged East African countries to work together, asserting that regional stability is more easily achieved through shared economic interdependence than through isolated efforts.

“There is a pressing need for economic integration for Africa to prosper,” he stated, reinforcing his long-held belief in the power of unity. He also cited the undugu (brotherhood) spirit as a foundational element for East African prosperity.

The Role of Swahili as a Unifying Language

President Museveni went further by advocating for the adoption of Swahili as a unifying language in East Africa. He believes Swahili could serve as an essential tool to foster connections among East Africans and promote regional unity. “By embracing Swahili, we can create a strong unity in East Africa,” Museveni stated.

Swahili’s unifying potential is seen as pivotal for enhancing cross-border communication and improving relations among East African nations, thus contributing to a more integrated and secure region.

The Shared Destiny of East Africa

The President reiterated that the people of Uganda, Kenya, and the broader African continent share a common destiny. He emphasized that regional cooperation is not just about economic growth but also about creating a shared future for the people of East Africa. His words highlighted the importance of mutual respect and a strong sense of belonging within the African family.

“Love Uganda because you need it. Love Kenya because you need it. Love Africa because you need it,” Museveni proclaimed, emphasizing the collective responsibility of East Africans in building a unified, prosperous region.

Future of East Africa

President Museveni’s lecture at the Kenya Defence College was attended by key officials, including the Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, Cabinet Secretary for Cooperative and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Hon. Patrick Mariru. The Commandant of the National Defence College (Kenya), Lt Gen. Juma Mwinyikai, was also present.

Museveni concluded his address by calling on the current and future leaders to play an active role in harnessing Africa’s abundant resources and shaping the continent’s future through economic cooperation and unity.
