MOGADISHU — The Somali National Army (SNA) has scored a significant victory in its fight against terrorism by killing Abdullahi Abukar Ali, the finance chief of Al-Shabaab, during a precision operation in Bakool region.
According to a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Defence said the planned strike took place in Warta Eey Duure, around 30 kilometres north of Xudur town. Officials confirmed that Ali was responsible for managing funds extorted from civilians and for coordinating the recruitment of child soldiers.
Describing him as “one of the most sought-after figures” in the militant network, the ministry said his elimination removed a major operational threat and disrupted Al-Shabaab’s financial and recruitment channels.
The government praised the “heroic” troops involved and reaffirmed its commitment, alongside Somali citizens and international allies, to dismantle the group’s military, financial, and extremist structures until the country is fully secure.
The strike comes just days after Somali forces, backed by Ugandan peacekeepers, recaptured Bariire, a strategic Lower Shabelle town held by Al-Shabaab since March. The town’s liberation reopened a key supply route and denied militants a staging point for attacks on Mogadishu.
Both operations form part of the 2025 Shabelle offensive, launched in February to clear Al-Shabaab from its strongholds across Middle and Lower Shabelle and Hiran regions. The campaign has seen intense clashes, with Somali troops reclaiming large areas and dismantling militant infrastructure despite resistance.
Security analysts say the killing of Abdullahi Abukar Ali, coupled with the Bariire victory, signals growing momentum in the government’s counterterrorism strategy, though Al-Shabaab remains capable of launching deadly raids and bombings in some areas.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YbZivzfjzw
For Somalia’s defence leadership, the mission’s success is proof that coordinated military action is weakening Al-Shabaab’s leadership, funding, and reach, bringing the country closer to lasting stability.
