Amazon informed employees about a new round of global layoffs after an email was accidentally sent, revealing the company’s plans. The email, written by Colleen Aubrey, a senior vice president at Amazon Web Services (AWS), detailed the layoffs of workers in the US, Canada, and Costa Rica. The company is restructuring to “strengthen the company.”

The draft email, included in a calendar invitation titled “Send project Dawn email,” referred to the company’s internal code name for the layoffs. Though the email was quickly canceled, it confirmed the layoffs. However, employees had not yet received the official announcement.

Amazon’s Ongoing Restructuring

The layoffs are part of Amazon’s plan to simplify operations by cutting management layers and improving efficiency. “This is a continuation of the work we’ve been doing for more than a year to strengthen the company by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy,” the email said.

The changes are difficult, but Amazon believes they will help the company move faster and serve customers better. The company is committed to reconfiguring its network to strengthen AWS for future success.

Project Dawn: A Shift in Focus

Amazon had already announced 14,000 job cuts in October and expected another round of reductions. A former employee confirmed that the company had planned to cut around 30,000 jobs by the end of May 2026. This second round of layoffs brings Amazon closer to that target.

Employees who were laid off could apply for other positions within Amazon. However, few roles were available. Those who did not find new roles would receive severance pay based on their time with the company.

Impact on Amazon and the Tech Industry

Amazon follows other major tech companies that have slashed thousands of jobs in recent years. Meta, Google, and Microsoft each laid off many workers as part of broader cost-cutting moves. Layoffs.fyi reports that over 700,000 tech workers have lost their jobs in the past four years.

Under CEO Andy Jassy, Amazon has embraced a stricter work culture. The company now requires in-office work five days a week, standing out from other tech giants that offer remote options.

In addition to layoffs, Amazon announced it will close its remaining Amazon-branded grocery stores, including Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go. The company plans to focus more on expanding its Whole Foods Market business. This move reflects Amazon’s ongoing effort to streamline operations and reduce costs.

The layoffs and store closures are part of Amazon’s broader transformation. As the company adapts to a more competitive and cost-conscious environment, it seeks to strengthen its position in the tech and retail industries.
