Mafubira—JINJA | A 27-year-old man was reportedly shot and killed while his friend sustained injuries following a late-night confrontation in Mafubira, on the outskirts of Jinja City, in an incident allegedly linked to a longstanding dispute over a failed marriage arrangement.
The deceased has been identified as Kyeyune Francis, a self-employed resident of Mafubira, while the injured man, Wambi Sydney Lordman, 29, also self-employed, was receiving medical treatment at Al-Shafa Modern Hospital along Mpumude Avenue at the time of reporting.
The shooting reportedly occurred at approximately Saturday, October 10, along the Jinja–Kamuli Road.
According to an eyewitness account provided to The Uganda Times, the incident followed a heated verbal confrontation involving Wambi, Kyeyune and two men who reportedly arrived in a green military vehicle.
One of the men, described as wearing military uniform, was subsequently identified by the injured survivor as Abdul Karim, a man allegedly involved in a longstanding marriage dispute concerning Patience Buderembe.
Confrontation Before the Shooting
An eyewitness who requested anonymity described a lengthy exchange before gunshots were heard.
According to the witness, the confrontation centred on the whereabouts of Buderembe and money allegedly paid to her stepfather, Semaganda Bony, as an advance towards a proposed marriage to Abdul Karim.
Wambi reportedly maintained that he had no knowledge of Buderembe’s whereabouts, explaining that he too had lost contact with her approximately three years earlier.
The witness recalled Wambi telling the man confronting him that Semaganda had received the money, but that he could not account for Buderembe’s disappearance.
Kyeyune, who was accompanying Wambi, reportedly attempted to intervene and calm the confrontation.
Moments later, gunshots were heard, sending people in the vicinity fleeing for safety.
The witness said the green military vehicle subsequently left the area. Its registration was only partially recalled, with the characters “H4DF” mentioned in the account.
Shortly after the vehicle departed, cries for help were reportedly heard from Wambi, who was calling for assistance for his critically injured friend.
The two men were subsequently transported to Al-Shafa Modern Hospital in a nearby vehicle.
Kyeyune was reportedly pronounced dead upon arrival, while Wambi remained under medical care.
Survivor Links Attack to Marriage Dispute
According to the account obtained by The Uganda Times, Wambi identified Abdul Karim as the alleged gunman and linked the confrontation to a marriage arrangement involving Buderembe.
The dispute reportedly began after Buderembe’s stepfather, Semaganda Bony, consented to a proposed marriage between his stepdaughter and Abdul Karim, described as a wealthy soldier.
Buderembe, however, was reportedly already romantically involved with Wambi and did not agree to the proposed marriage.
Money and other items were allegedly advanced to Semaganda in anticipation of the marriage, which never materialised.
Buderembe’s whereabouts have reportedly remained unknown to those involved in the dispute for approximately three years.
The injured survivor reportedly told those attending to him that he had also been unable to establish contact with her during that period.
Wambi personally told and clarified these details to The Uganda Times while receiving treatment, in addition to the information provided by the anonymous eyewitness. He identified Abdul Karim as the alleged shooter and said the confrontation was connected to the disputed marriage arrangement, the advance payments made to Semaganda Bony and Buderembe’s disappearance. These allegations had not been independently verified at the time of reporting.
Police Investigations Underway
A reporter who reached the scene after the shooting found the area reportedly cordoned off by police officers.
The two victims had already been transported to hospital.
At Al-Shafa Modern Hospital, Wambi was receiving medical attention, with his initial account of the incident reportedly identifying the alleged attacker and explaining the background to the confrontation.
Medical personnel and police subsequently restricted further access to the injured man to allow treatment and related procedures to continue.
Police were reportedly conducting preliminary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Abdul Karim’s whereabouts had not been established at the time of reporting, and The Uganda Times had not obtained an official response from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces concerning the allegations involving a man described as a soldier.
The identity of the second man reportedly accompanying Abdul Karim also remained unknown.
The Uganda Times could not independently confirm the alleged gunman’s military status, the ownership of the vehicle or the circumstances under which the firearm was discharged.
The circumstances surrounding Kyeyune’s death and the injuries sustained by Wambi remain matters for investigation.
This is a developing story. More details will follow as additional information becomes available.
