Sudan Crisis: US evacuates its diplomatic staff in Khartoum

April 23, 2023

The United States has confirmed that it has evacuated its embassy staff from Sudan, but planned evacuations by some other countries have faced difficulties amid battles between rival military factions that have triggered a humanitarian crisis.

Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group accused each other of attacking a convoy of French nationals, with both claiming that one French person was injured. Meanwhile, the fighting in Khartoum and other parts of the country has killed over 400 people.

The violence pits Sudan’s army against the RSF, who jointly staged a coup in 2021 but fell out during negotiations over a plan to form a civilian government and integrate the RSF into the armed forces.

President Joe Biden has called for a ceasefire and temporary suspension of operations at the US embassy in Khartoum. The sudden collapse into warfare has dashed plans to restore civilian rule and brought an already impoverished country to the brink of a humanitarian disaster.
