Lake Victoria Boat Tragedy: 20 Confirmed Dead, Others Missing After Capsizing

Twenty people lost their lives on Wednesday morning after a boat they were traveling in capsized on Lake Victoria. According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, the boat was carrying 34 people from Lwanabatya landing site in Kalangala district to Kasenyi landing site in Entebbe when it encountered heavy winds at night and capsized.

As of now, the tragic incident has resulted in 20 confirmed fatalities, while nine people have been rescued. The boat was reportedly transporting bags of charcoal, fresh foods, silverfish, and other items. Overloading and adverse weather conditions are believed to be the primary causes of the accident.

Efforts to locate the missing individuals are still underway, with assistance from the Police Marines, UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit, and local community members on the water. Authorities are urging the public to prioritize safety by wearing life jackets while traveling on water and avoiding overloading their vessels.

The survivors’ accounts support the claims of overloading and challenging weather conditions as contributing factors to the boat’s tragic overturning. Updates will be provided as the rescue operations continue and more information becomes available.
