The local football community, alongside the football governing body, FUFA, came together for the funeral of the late Darius Mugoye, former FUFA 2nd vice-president. Moses Magogo, the FUFA president, and Budiope East MP led the tributes, praising Mugoye as a selfless and caring individual who prioritized the welfare of others.

Expressing regret at not delving deeper into knowing Mugoye personally, Magogo acknowledged that a stronger connection could have prompted more efforts to save his life. The gathering paid heartfelt tribute to Mugoye, recognizing him as a trusted figure instrumental in shaping FUFA.

The Chairman of the National Council of Sports (NCS), present at the burial, commended Mugoye’s hard work and passion for sports, underscoring his significant contributions to FUFA. The Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports, Rev. Can. Duncans Mugumya, led the church session, urging public officials to emulate Mugoye’s selfless service.

Condolence messages poured in from FIFA, CAF, CECAFA, and various African football associations during the funeral. A representative from the Rwanda Football Association, Sixbert Habimana, who also serves as a FIFA development officer, was in attendance.

Darius Mugoye, aged 42 and FUFA 2nd Vice-president, passed away on Tuesday at Mengo Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Rubanga, Sheema district, Mugoye was the fourth of nine children to the late Alfred and Constance Mugoye. His educational journey included Mbarara Pentecostal Primary School, Ntare School, Muntuyera Kitunga High School, and higher education in English and Literature at Nkozi University.

Mugoye, the owner of St. Mary’s SS and St. Mary’s New Hope FC in the Kampala Regional League, also served as the Treasurer of the Kawempe District Football Association from 2008 to 2012. His involvement extended to holding the position of secretary for Zone 9 (now Kampala Region FA) in 2012, and he was appointed to the FUFA Executive in 2013, serving in various capacities, including 2nd vice president until his passing. The football community bids farewell to a dedicated leader and contributor to the sport.
