The National Unity Platform has designated Joel Ssenyonyi, the Member of Parliament for Nakawa West, as the new Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, succeeding Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba. The announcement was made by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the President of the National Unity Platform, at the party’s headquarters in Kampala. Kyagulanyi emphasized that the leadership changes should not be viewed as a demotion for Mpuuga, but rather as a reflection of the party’s commitment to rotational leadership. Kyagulanyi expressed gratitude to Mpuuga for his effective leadership during challenging times, acknowledging his resilience and dedication. Mpuuga, who represented Nyendo-Mukungwe Division in Masaka City, has now been appointed as a Commissioner of Parliament, taking over from Francis Zaake, who is now the Shadow Minister for the Presidency and Security, as well as the Deputy Chief Whip. Following the announcement, Mpuuga expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the position for two and a half years, emphasizing that their collective goal is to contribute to a better Uganda. He urged supporters to back the new Leader of the Opposition and provide constructive advice. In response to his appointment, Ssenyonyi expressed gratitude to the party and pledged to fulfill his responsibilities to the best of his abilities. While acknowledging that he may not be the most experienced or educated, he emphasized the shared goals of the opposition and expressed his commitment to collaboration within the opposition teams.
