During a UPDF recruitment event in Merikit Sub-county, Tororo District, a 23-year-old individual was apprehended by the army on Thursday. The arrest occurred amidst hundreds of hopeful recruits.
The suspect was found in possession of forged Uganda Certificate of Education documents, according to military officials.
“His certificate was dated 2021, but UNEB did not conduct exams that year due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” explained Colonel Saad Katemba, who oversees recruitment in the eastern region.
After his arrest, the suspect was handed over to the police. During interrogation, he admitted that he had only completed up to Senior Three.
“Police are investigating how he obtained fake UNEB documents dated 2021,” stated Albert Amula, the deputy RDC of Tororo.
Since UPDF recruitments commenced two months ago, the force has faced significant challenges related to the forgery of academic documents by potential recruits.
Colonel Katemba assured that measures have been implemented to combat this issue. “We have devices to verify the authenticity of the documents presented,” he noted.
The detained individual was one of the 116 applicants who attended the UPDF recruitment in Tororo, where the force is conducting recruitment for the districts of Busia, Butaleja, and Tororo.
