President Yoweri Museveni has reiterated the government’s dedication to improving sports infrastructure following Uganda’s successful bid to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
During a visit to Bunyoro, Museveni, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni, inspected the ongoing construction at Hoima Stadium. The site is one of Uganda’s key developments in preparation for the continental tournament.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Museveni disclosed that the government had initially considered Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira due to its historical significance. However, Hoima emerged as the preferred location because of its strategic advantage. The presence of an airport under development ensures smoother logistics for teams and fans.
“I congratulate the people of Hoima on these critical infrastructure improvements, which will drive economic growth,” Museveni stated.
He encouraged private investors to support the government’s efforts by expanding hospitality services, including hotels, to accommodate the anticipated surge in visitors.
The construction of Hoima Stadium is a pivotal step in Uganda’s AFCON 2027 preparations, a tournament the nation will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania. The project is expected to create jobs, boost tourism, and enhance sports facilities for local athletes, solidifying Uganda’s position in regional and international football development.
