A new documentary has shed light on Denmark’s brain warehouse, where the brains of patients with mental health issues such as schizophrenia and depression were taken without their consent and stored in containers.
The department, known as the Institute of Brain Pathology, was connected to the Risskov Psychiatric Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark and was run by pathologist Knud Aage Lorentzen.
The collection, which now stands at 9,476 brains and is believed to be the largest in the world, has sparked a major ethical debate, with some calling for the brains to be buried or destroyed, while others argue that they should be used in research as a way of making amends for the harm caused to the patients and their families.
The brains were moved to a new university in 2018 due to a lack of funding, with each brain given an individual number for identification purposes.
